New Professional Director?

Vinderstrategi A/S is focused on spreading and developing professional boards, and takes the term ”professional board” seriously. The use of the title ”professional director” in the media has become increasingly commonplace among CEOs and managers who offer their services as members of corporate boards.

Despite the frequent use of the term, only a few have ventured specific explanations of what professionalism means in the boardroom. Vinderstrategi A/S has a clear idea of what it should mean.

We focus on the three main tasks for which boards are responsible:

  • Ensuring that the company has a solid strategy – and the right solid strategy
  • Ensuring that the right resources are available to make the strategy succeed. Primarily in relation to cash flow and human resources
  • Ensuring that top management and the board stay within the law

However, a board member can, in our opinion, only truly be considered professional if he or she:

  1. Is contractually employed and therefore sees the work on the board as a passion and as an important responsibility
  2. Is sharp when it comes to developing a strategy for the company – also when it comes to implementing the strategy in the whole organization
  3. Is able to contribute with professional experience from other companies, other industries, own top management positions and board posts
  4. Is ambitious, brave and strong-willed, regardless of the degree of success experienced by the company – and has good manners
  5. Is conscious of where and how the board adds value for the company – including focus on individual goals and success criteria
  6. Continues to pursue professional development by, for example, self-development and self-evaluation.
  7. Has a strong professional network that can be drawn on when necessary
  8. Understands a set of tools appropriate for the boardroom – and knows how to use them in practice
  9. Has relevant personal, professional and social competencies – and is able to use them in the boardroom
  10. Is able to provide top managers with new perspectives on and inspiration for their work
